| THE MAN |
The largest and most central burnable
art structure at Kiwiburn is The Man, a 4 meter high
wooden effigy which will be burned on the Sunday night
after the Temple burn. "The Man" is the core
of the Burning Man festival, which itself has roots
in an ancient pagan ritual, 1000's of years old. Read
more about the history of the early years of Burning
Man here. Kiwiburn as New Zealand's Burning Man Regional
aims to inspire a similar bringing together of the community
as in the early days of Burning Man: "Today
a colony and soon, an international community of like-minded
friends — all drawn by this towering effigy —
a gateway to a primal ecstasy of communion, celebration
and consummation." |
| THE TEMPLE |
The Temple is a Burning Man tradition.
Each year, a non-denominational temple is built where
anybody can go to meditate, pray, perform ritual or
just contemplate quietly. Many people choose to write
messages to loved ones, or notes of things they would
like to let go from their past, or simply thoughts they
would like to put out to the universe and leave them
in the temple.
As the festival progresses and more people leave their
messages of hope, loss and life, an energy builds up
in the Temple, culminating in the burning on the last
night, a giant cathartic release of emotion.
The Temple will burn on Saturday night after The Man. |
| THE HICKORY DICKORY DOCK STOP |
We would like to create an installation of hanging art work from a large tree. With all types of paintings, sculptures and lantins hanging in a variety of ways! Under the tree will be paper and materials for people to come and make their own art, which we can then display and run a gallery off the tree- so attach poles and washing lines around the tree, where people can then come rest and draw in the shade and make the gallery grow throughout the festival. Also we will have a decorating cart- with face paints, feathers and flowers, along with being in fancy dress ourselves! We plan to decorate the masses and create an interactive art gallery- where anyone can come and contribute their pieces! |
| THE DODGY ROGER |
Large raft in the shape of a pirate ship to be on the lake during the day and beached and secured at night. The Dodgy Roger is Kiwiburn's (and possibly the whole burner world's - since I think we have the only (full) lake) - first floating Art Boat. Pirates will be able to ride the ship, buckling swashes and swashing buckles as the feeling takes them. There may be a pirate party... Arrrr! |
| Dance Dance Decoration |
In the spirit of Burning Man's Dance Dance Immolation, Dance Dance Decoration is a dancing game (like the popular Dance Dance Revolution). The difference is that failing dancers will be sprayed with paint in an artistic fashion. Well sprayed with paint, anyway. |
| Journey Past The Centre Of The Earth |
Nowhere, Europe's regional burn, is close to being the antipode of Kiwiburn. Which means that by tunnelling in a fairly straight line past the earths core, a suitable borer will arrive at Nowhere. We plan to build such a machine using tried and tested techniques. It will be set up at Kiwiburn and after the festival will carry the intrepid crew (and a collection of Kiwiana and photographs of here) to Spain, taking around 5 months to make the trip. Also, it will arrive upside down. |
| CUBIT - BOX OF MYSTERY |
The cube of mystery may or may not make its way around. Something may or may not make it's way out of the cube to you. You may or may not like it. |
| THE FUTURE TREE OF DREAMS |
Come create your very own Dream flag to hang in the Future Tree! Magic must happen! Thinking about your dreams and wishes, finding materials that can represent them, then binding them into art and letting them go in the wind, is parallel to how we need to treat our dreams in everyday life. Come sit under the chilled space of a leafy tree, where there will be baskets of fabrics and material bits 'n' bobs for you to piece together representations of past and present dreams for your future, or if you want, just come create some whacky flag. All contributions of fabric, buttons, badges, baubles, threads etc etc most welcome :) Child friendly if child comes with caregiver. ;-) |
| THE PORTABLE MERKABA |
sacred geometry orgone accumulator/generator. The Merkaba, centrepiece of last year's kiwiburn temple, rises from the ashes in a new incarnation. The now portable form will travel to multiple festivals. The Merkaba combines a structure of sacred geometry, an energy skeleton of Reichian Orgone accumulator material, and a powered orgone generator using more modern techniques developed by the cloudbusting underground. It is both a place of quiet contemplation and an active experiment in subtle energies. Experience for yourself whether it feels different inside, and in what peculiar ways, and record your impressions in the logbook to share your thoughts with others. |
| ANDNA |
The art structure will be called "ANDNA", which is simply (and boringly) DNA written backwards and forwards. It will have the form of a DNA helical molecule, with at least 8 simple bamboo burningman figures (the atoms) positioned up the structure in such a way as to define the helical structure. For the lower figures, each man's face will have some unique characteristics that will represent some significant event in past kiwiburn history (the lower figures), while the upper figures will have faces that represent likely/possible/highly speculative events in future kiwiburn history. As for my previous kiwiburn art efforts I am choosing to convey the big picture of kiwiburn in a way that links everything in kiwiburn history together, and then tie that into the overall theme of the event. In other words where kiwiburn has come from, where it is now, and where it is going, and all in the context of one continuum with a unique evolutionary signature or imprint. |
