WHAT TO BRING
Radical self reliance means you bring everything you require to camp at the event. Water, food and shelter are the primary requisites.
WATER – Ensure that you have enough drinking, cooking and cleaning water for the length of the festival, roughly 6 litres a day would cover it.
FOOD – Bring food that is quick and easy to prepare and safe to store for the length of the event. Remember to think about the amount of waste it’s going to produce as you’ll be taking it with you when you leave.
SHELTER – You will need to bring waterproof shelter whether it be tents and gazebos or perhaps something a bit more flash.
RUBBISH – Everything you bring with you, needs to leave with you as well, yes, that includes all your smelly rubbish. Pack it in, pack it out. (see MOOP below)
YOU AND THE ENVIRONMENT – Expect that there will be hot weather with sun that loves to burn as well as rain and maybe even thunderstorms. Remember sun block, sunglasses and a hat as well as wet weather gears. No one is invincible, so a simple first aid kit is always recommended. Insect repellent would also not go amiss, after all this is New Zealand, mosquitoes and sand flies can become an annoyance. Non-natives can be very sensitive to sand fly bites. If you are planning on taking a dip in the lake at the site it may be wise to bring calamine lotion or something similar, as there are little critters living in the weeds that grow in the water and can leave some people with itchy little bites!
There is no commercial trading and you will not be able to purchase anything at the festival.
You should also bring something to share with the community, a performance, an art work, theme camp, food, or gift, basically anything you would like to see at the event... this is not a rule that is in any way enforced... although Kiwiburn is about community and it is the giving that pulls us together.
It is a gifting economy where gifts are given without the expectation of return.
And last but not least, bring an open mind and a sense of humour. For a comprehensive guide, download or view the Survival Guide which is provided in .pdf format here. Ideally print a copy out to bring with you to Kiwiburn and to help with your planning beforehand.
