WHAT TO EXPECT

Kiwiburn is held in various paddocks that range from hilly to flat. Expect hot weather with reasonably humid days. It’s a good idea to spend a lot of the day in the shade as you will quickly learn that it doesn’t take long to get sun burnt (10 minutes in the high heat of the day). It rains from time to time and it has been known for thunderstorms with high winds to make a visit, so make sure your belongings are secure just in case.

Expect a diverse group of people from all ages and different corners of the world, each one with different ideas, beliefs and reasons for being at the event. Try to keep an open mind and a sense of humour about the things you see and experiences you have, maybe even delve in to something you’ve never done before!

Having sprung from the now 50,000 strong Burning Man event in the United States, Kiwiburn has a few social norms and traditions that newcomers may find unusual:

MOOP (matter out of place) – it’s like a cardinal sin for Burners... if you litter (even a cigarette butt) it is insulting to, and condemned by, Burners in general. Leaving no trace is very important to the continuation of these events.

GIFTING – it is normal for someone to walk up and give you things.

HUGS NOT HANDSHAKES – some people hug hello, they don't shake hands. This is also a good way to avoid any tummy bugs that may be going round (of course you should not feel obliged to return the hug if you’re not comfortable).

PERFORMANCE/PARTICIPATION – people dress in costume... sing... dance... and perform random acts of kindness... so go crazy with it, it's just for fun!

As much as we are about freedom, we are a caring community and as a part of our community you have these responsibilities:

1: Do no harm. The only thing that will get you removed from the event is if you cause harm to another. This also means that you are responsible for the health and safety of those around you, young and old. Be mindful of this and take all steps to avoid tragedy.

2: Look after each other. You should come prepared to take care of yourself and get by without the help of others. There is however always going to be some odd thing that you can help people with, and you are encouraged to do so :-)
