Guiding Principle: Decommodification

Dec 22, 2025

During this, the most consumerist time of the year, we thought it would be pertinent to give some space to the Guiding Principle of Decommodification.

In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community keeps Kiwiburn free from commercial sponsorships, transactions, and advertising. In practical terms, that means no brands, no sales, and no money changing hands once you are inside the fence.

If you are new, this can take a moment to click. There are no food stalls, no merch, and no “I’ll just buy one” solutions. Instead, people gift things freely. A meal, a drink, a workshop, help with a broken bike, or a good conversation. You do not consume Kiwiburn, you participate in it.

That extends to hustling your new pre-workout-matcha-startup brand on the paddock. Take a week off from watching the endless tides of dollars and cents.

Decommodification is what makes those interactions feel different. Without prices or logos, exchanges are human and a bit messy, in a good way. Bring what you need, offer what you can, and lean into the experience. That is how the city works.

In this writer’s opinion, Decommodification is the hardest principle to follow perfectly, because of how ingrained commerce is in our collective thinking. But the pursuit of that principle is what makes Kiwiburn so special and unique compared to other experiences. (Obligatory ‘we are not a festival’ statement here).
