On the Solstice, Lōemis Festival invite you to join in a parade to accompany their Winter beast, Somnium, down to the Wellington Lagoon where it will be floated out onto the water and set on fire in a ritual that will release the beast’s belly full of dark dreams…
The details:
The parade starts at 5.30pm outside the Wellington Museum. Paraders are encouraged to dress up. We will be accompanied by a band as we parade Somnium to the Waterfront.
The burning on Wellington Lagoon will start at approx. 6pm.
Te Wharewaka will be open so that you can purchase hot drinks and food to watch the flames by.
About Somnium:
Somnium is a Winter beast created for Lōemis Festival by artist Leda Farrow. Somnium feeds off your darkest dreams – his belly is open and hungry. You can visit Somnium at Wellington Museum’s Flux Space until 14 June. You will find the space equipped with writing desks to suit all personality types so that you can put your darkest dreams onto paper and then post it into Somnium’s belly. On the Solstice, Somnium and his belly full of our darkest thoughts will go up in flame.
There is a mask-making workshop with Leda at the Wellington Museum on Sunday 11 June, 1pm – 4pm if you’d like to make a mask for your Parade outfit!
