For years Kiwiburn has been asked by the community why we aren’t using composting toilets. The answer is… it’s hard! However, we have done some thinking and Kiwiburn 2023 will see a first foray into the wonderful world of poop composting.
What is the plan?
- We are building a trial bank of composting toilets from donated wood.
- The decomposition of “humanure” will be accomplished by tiger worms (RAWR), who have the ability to consume the decompositional bacteria and, through a process in their gut, defecate bacteria that quickly build soil biota (living creatures of soil).
- This process also locks toxins and heavy metals to basic elements such as carbon, so they are no longer dangerous to plants.
- The Sanitation team will be taking care of the toilets and worm farms during the event. If you’re interested in how this will all work then volunteer here!
- We hope to also provide a menstruation station this year as part of the “toilet village”.
If this works for us, we can not only become more ecologically sound, we can also free up a lot of funds which are currently spent on portaloos. “Make Art, Not Poop!”
Big thanks to Aiden Dowers for the generous donation of wood for this trial!
Watch this space for more news, and remember this is only a trial – you will still see plenty of portaloos at Kiwiburn 2023!
