As a community that believes in radical inclusion, we value the cultural and political diversity amongst us. We work together as a community to ensure that everyone feels safe and welcome at Kiwiburn, wherever we hail from, and with all our differences and connections.
After a few incidents of flag theft and property damage at the last two Kiwiburns, we wanted to share a gentle reminder about how we care for each other and the space we create together. These behaviours don’t reflect the values at the heart of Kiwiburn: Radical Inclusion, Civic Responsibility, and Communal Effort, and we’d love everyone’s help in keeping the Paddock respectful and welcoming.
Kiwiburn thrives when we look out for one another. That can mean having kind conversations, helping educate where needed, and reaching out for support if something doesn’t feel right. Racially motivated acts or damage to someone else’s property are especially out of step with our shared principles.
While we hope it never comes to this, people who repeatedly act outside these values may be asked to leave the Paddock or may not be able to attend future events.
As a friendly refresher, here’s the short version of the KB flag policy that was shared in the EFP a few months ago (and yes, we know this time of year feels very long):
- Please don’t fly flags on official Kiwiburn structures or buildings. This includes the Hub, Temple, Effigy, Site Office, and any other officially associated spaces. These areas belong to everyone, so we keep them neutral.
Out on the Paddock, you’re welcome to fly flags at your own camp, share your symbols, wave your colours, and celebrate your weirdness. The only limit is that flags or symbols that are officially recognised as offensive or internationally recognised as hateful aren’t okay.
Clothing and personal expression aren’t part of this policy. Wear what you like and express yourself freely, this isn’t something we’re policing.
In short: keep official spaces flag-free, make your camp as expressive as you like, and if you notice someone taking or tampering with a flag, please reach out to a Ranger so we can help.
