Tēnā tātou Kiwiburn whānau! As we prepare to gather by the beautiful Rangitīkei Awa (river), we know you’re keen to understand what you can do to be a good kiatiaki (guardian) for a place that is special, both to us and our tāngata whenua (hosts) – Ngāti Hauiti and Ngāti Apa. The river is a source of life, connection, and inspiration for us all. With a little Communal Effort, we can ensure it remains a pristine and joyful space for future burns and future generations.
Here are three simple ways we can show care and respect for the river:
- Avoid Waste: Please make sure no waste – human or otherwise – enters the water or is left beside the river. Every little action helps keep our river clean and safe for all.
- Alcohol-Free Waters: For everyone’s wellbeing and the river’s health, please refrain from taking or consuming alcohol in the water.
- Keep the River Natural: Let’s leave the riverbed and banks as we found them. Please avoid digging holes, taking stones, or altering the river in any way.
This is about care for our place. Leave No Trace! Together, let’s continue to keep Rangitīkei Awa a source of health and happiness for our communities.

Ngā mihi nui for your kindness and for being part of our caring Kiwiburn community.
