For most of us, getting to Kiwiburn is the biggest chunk of our carbon footprint – we had to travel more than 600,000 collective kilometres around Aotearoa to cause mischief and mayhem on the Paddock. Curious to know what your own footprint was? Here’s how you can do a rough calculation for your Kiwiburn 2024 transport emissions:
- How did you get to Kiwiburn?
- Driving solo: On average, a car emits about 0.24 kg of CO2 per km.
- Driving with a buddy: In addition to having a carpool karaoke buddy, you can use a lower emissions rate of 0.12 kg of CO2 per km per person, making it a much greener option!
- Bus or Other Public Transport. Buses emit approximately 0.03 kg of CO2 per km per person.
- Those on horses emitted 0.025kg of CO2 per km per rider. Yeehaw!
- If you and your friends shared a human powered rickshaw, great news as this emits practically no CO2 per km – you’re the greenest (and fittest) of the bunch.
- Calculate your round-trip distance to and from Kiwiburn.
- Multiply the distance by the emission factor to get your total emissions! For example, if you’re driving 300 km solo, your emissions would be 300 km * 0.24 kg/km = 72 kg of CO2.
