We’re Down 12%

Nov 11, 2024

As we brace for whatever weather mother nature throws at us this month, we’ve been busy crunching the numbers to understand our carbon emissions for Kiwiburn 2024. We even upgraded our transport emissions calculator to be waaaay more precise!

Using our fancy new calculations, Kiwiburn 2024 came in at 139.4 Tonnes of CO2. That’s a 12% drop per person compared to last year, which is awesome! This was mainly due to fewer Aucklanders and more Wellingtonians (so less overall distance travelled), an uptick in EVs, hybrids, and newer, more efficient vehicles – we’ve made some serious progress.

What does 139.4 tonnes of carbon look like?

  • Brewing and drinking 2,363,559 cups of coffee
  • Streaming your favourite show nonstop for about 442 years
  • Flying 73 round-trips from Auckland to London
  • Throwing 35,744 6-hour long dance parties with full sound, lighting, and DJ gear – that’s one a day for 98 years!

To balance all this carbon out, we’d need to plant around 1,475 native trees that survive for at least 25 years. Keep an eye out here in the EFP for more information on what YOU can do in the spirit of Self Reliance and Civic Responsibility to make your carbon footprint even greener.
