Introducing Jo – New Communications Team member

May 25, 2020

Tell us a little about yourself

My name is Jo Legutko, I just moved to Wellington from South Africa (SA). I have never been to Kiwiburn (!) but I have done six AfrikaBurns – running various Theme Camps and helping build a couple of Mutant Vehicles.

Firstly, what does the Communications Team Member role involve?

Writing for the Electric Fence Post, mostly! For now anyway, let’s see how this evolves

How do you spend your time when you are not doing things related to Kiwiburn?

At the moment, unpacking milliooooons of boxes of stuff that just arrived from SA, doing some arty things and getting to know New Zealand.

Being involved with Kiwiburn can take a lot of energy. How do you re-energise?

I love the creative energy that I get from making things (for Burns or in any way, shape or form). I also get a lot of energy from hanging out with good friends, cooking, making art, planting things… and yes, lying on the couch watching TV happens too

Do you have a favourite burn outfit?

I have a lot of GOLD…. gold corsets, a fabulous gold bodysuit, gold boots (spray paint is your friend). The Burn is where I literally shine.

What skills have you learned by being involved with Kiwiburn?

AfrikaBurn has taught me how to be self-reliant and make things happen. I love being the person with the right tool for the job; I learnt how to fix things, I learnt how to make things work even under harsh conditions. I also learnt that a creative project is most rewarding if it is done for other people.

What has been your favourite moment at a Burn?

Giving people lifts on my Magic Carpet mutant vehicle while singing “I can show you the world” until I lost my voice!

What are you most excited about for Kiwiburn 2021?

Seeing what it’s like to have a Burn with TREES and a RIVER. OMG!
