Our ongoing mission at Kiwiburn is to create meaningful experiences, with minimal environmental impact on the Paddock, and the world in general. Embracing the ‘leave no trace’ Principle, we’re on a mission to minimise our collective carbon footprint.
Our carbon output includes power usage, the Burn spectacle itself, on-site waste, and the journeys that bring us all to Cooks Road each year. Transport unsurprisingly accounts for a staggering 95% of this number. It takes the lead in our carbon choreography. In 2023, our transport footprint hit 149.5T, roughly 65kg per person – equivalent to the emissions from 1.7 LPG gas cookers burning non-stop.
To offset this carbon trail, we’d need 1,577 native trees, each pledging a 25-year commitment to clean our atmospheric slate. But our ambition doesn’t stop there; we’re on a quest to undo the carbon echoes of past Burns.
What would this take? Roughly a forest of 12,985 native trees would need to suddenly appear in order to offset all the previous Kiwiburns to-date. A big ask, for sure, but you’ve got to start somewhere.
Immediate action is our encore. Reduction projects take centre stage, and we’re calling on our community (that’s you) to join the carbon cleanup party. Expect ideas to trim transport emissions and tree-planting proposals in your inbox soon.
Stay tuned for initiatives to slice Kiwiburn’s emissions, balancing what can’t be reduced with responsible offsets. We’re your go-to source for actionable steps to minimise your impact. Keep an eye out for tips on leaving no trace and forms to share your earth-positive endeavours for our 2024 carbon calculations.
Here’s to always doing better.
