As we count down to late January, Kiwiburn still desperately needs helpers to make sure it comes off without a hitch. Some of the roles detailed below and can’t do it without them. We’re less than two months away, so the time to claim your role is now!
You can find job descriptions for all of these positions on Kiwiburn’s Volunteer Opportunities page. Apply by emailing volunteer@kiwiburn.com. Tell us which role/roles you are interested in and we will take it from there!
Leaders:
Sanitation Lead
Become Kiwiburn’s Crap Master extraordinaire – oversee a team of volunteers responsible for not only keeping our portaloos clean, but also sprucing them up with art. This means that yes, you can put fake skeletons inside the loos to scare the living bejeezus out of innocent pissers. You’ll also oversee COVID safety requirements, meaning you can brag to the global Burner community about how you saved Kiwiburn from the ‘rona. Successful applicants will be strong leaders with a creative streak, will need to be available for up to an hour a week leading up to the Burn, on-site from three days prior to the gates opening, and work full time throughout the Burn.
Second-in-Commands:
Site Safety Facilitator 2IC:
This 2IC helps the Site Safety Facilitator lead and communicate with the Safety team, help manage their team’s budget, and make sure ExCom understand what they require. Your responsibilities would be primarily before and after the Burn itself rather than on-site. You should ideally have some leadership experience, including with at least one of the Black Sheep Rangers, FAST, Health and Safety, or Site Manager teams at Kiwiburn.
Health and Safety Officer 2IC:
Do you love wrapping the world in red tape? Someone’s gotta do it. The Health and Safety 2IC reviews the paperwork submitted by Theme Camps, Art installations, and volunteer teams. You’d also be involved in inspecting Theme Camps and Art installations on-site to ensure all hazards have been identified and managed. You’d need to be on-site one to two days prior to the Burn to help provide training, and have strong teamwork, communication, and time-management skills, plus a familiarity with the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.
Site Management 2iCs:
Site Management looks after all of the things happening on site (duh!) during the Burn. There are multiple 2ICs who each work with an experienced Site Manager, so you will not be alone! You’ll need to be reliable enough to do a 12-hour shift while following team protocols, have good communication and de-escalation skills (such as ability to keep calm and make good decisions in crisis situations), and be empathetic and assertive. This is an onsite-only role – no time required prior to the Burn!
Site Office 2iC:
The Site Office 2iC makes sure everyone visiting Site Office gets the info and support they need as soon as possible. You’d be on site from 11 or 12 January to provide admin support to the Event Management team and Build Crew. During the Burn, you’d attend some of the Site Office shifts, and then stick around for a couple days after the Burn. To do this, you’ll need to have a good memory and communication skills, and knowledge of Google Suite.
Crew Roles:
Sound Team
If you’ve always wanted to get involved in bringing phat choons to the Paddock yet perhaps have utterly no musical ability yourself (you were booted out of school choir for turning every song into a mangled wail, but a loud one), then join the Sound Team, who monitor and assist Sound Camps to ensure their sound is a good as possible – even more critically, that it is within the restrictions set by our resource consent! You can do this even if you DO have some musical ability! During the Burn you’ll do one 24-hour shift, working with the Site Manager and Sound Lead to ensure Kiwiburn fulfils its noise responsibilities as a Good Neighbour and gets to come back again next year. Previous experience with sound management or engineering is a plus, as is the ability to calmly approach DJ’s when they get out of hand.
MOOP Crew
Fancy yourself a magpie in human form, picking up others’ litter to make the world a better place? Do you wanna hang around the Paddock for a couple of days after Exodus, because you just can’t bear letting go? Then join the MOOP Team! Maybe you’ll find some hidden treasure among all those lost tent pegs and empty plastic bags!
Crew Support
Help yourself burn by helping others! This three-person Crew Support team guides and supports other volunteers in the lead up to the Burn, with regular check-ins to prevent b(B)urn-out. Your role would be to keep morale high by lending an ear, assisting with issue resolution, and even sending out little tidbits of appreciation when necessary. Applicants should be familiar with Google Suite and most importantly, should be empathetic souls with excellent communication and problem solving skills. Some mental health training and experience would be preferable. The role is one to two hours per week from now until the Burn, however it won’t require you to give up time at the Burn itself!
