Let there be WATER!

Oct 10, 2022

Big news! Kiwiburn 2023 will provide drinking water on site!

Oh yes, you heard right – no more lugging tons of water in your cars. ExCom have approved an infrastructure budget to provide drinking water to all Burners on the Paddock.

There will be a centralised water station where anyone can pick up 20 litres at a time – bring a container and refill when needed. We are stocking up enough potable water to provide for all Burners’ needs for the duration of the event.

Why do this? Other than convenience, this is a sustainability initiative. We have identified that this might have a huge effect on our carbon footprint. Having to carry water for everyone makes car pooling or public transport hard – we hope that by providing water on site, we will increase the number of people per vehicle and also reduce the plastic bottles used. You can now also walk or cycle to the Burn, if that’s your jam!

What about Radical Self Reliance we hear you say? Fair point. However the sustainability angle is too strong to ignore, and unlike the Big Burn held in a desert, we already have access to such lush things like grass, a river, and shade, which already undermine that principle to a degree. Providing water to Kiwiburners is no hardship and just makes sense. The area gets plenty of rain, so why should we not take advantage of this? Please also be assured that none of this water will be taken from the river either.

We will keep you posted about the installation of water tanks and how the system will work in the months running up to the event, and please let us know if you have ideas or questions about this initiative!
