Principles!

Oct 20, 2025

Did you know Kiwiburn has guiding principles? Ten in total, with an eleventh that is considered unofficial but very important. What are they though and why do they exist?

Adopted from Burning Man, these principles are the reflection of the culture and community that is being a ‘burner.’ They shape the social environment and participation behaviour we want to see from our community by clearly stating our values and expectations. These are not only good to know for Kiwiburn, they are also important for everyday life beyond the Paddock as well. So what is your favourite principle and why?

Let’s start with Immediacy!

The Kiwiburn website has an awesome article on this principle that was just too good to change, so here it is.

“Practising immediacy means listening to yourself and being true to the moment. Leap on the “hell yeahs” – take the shibari workshop, join the conga-line as it passes your tent, taste the deadly spicy curry. And then, respect your beautiful power to say “hell no!” – take a moment out, chill in a quiet space, embrace the JOMO not the FOMO. Trust your feelings, live your best Paddock life, be present – that’s Immediacy.”

So how can you use this in your everyday life? Well, take that course you’ve been putting off, that walk with the friend you haven’t seen in a while, embrace the creative spark as it hits you, and don’t forget that rest days are important too.
