Weeding through seven million applications was hard, but worth it – we have an amazing new EFP writer, Tracey!
First of all – how did you get into Burns and what is your Burn history?
I spent a year living in Canada back in 2015/16. One of my friends over there was talking about this thing called Burning Man and it all sounded so magical. She then proceeded to inform me about the NZ version, Kiwiburn – I was stoked to learn there was something like this at home! 2017 was my first burn and I’ve been hooked ever since!
How do you spend your time when you are not doing things related to Kiwiburn?
My home is a madhouse that keeps me busy – 6 chooks, 5 very mischievous goats, 5 alpacas, the sweetest cat, and a completely insane puppy. When I’m not hanging with the animals and working on the farm, I spend my time pottering away on woodworking projects, getting lost in a good book, spinning fire, and hanging out with friends and family.
Being involved with Kiwiburn can take a lot of energy. How do you re-energise?
I’m incredibly lucky to have an amazing view from my back doorstep. Sitting on the porch with a hot cuppa, watching the clouds float past, seeing the animals chilling happily in their paddocks, hearing the birds chirping – nature re-energises me!
Do you have a favourite burn outfit?
I’m all about the onesies!
What skills have you learned by being involved with Kiwiburn?
I fell in love with fire spinning at my first Burn and got myself a set of poi the day I got home. Since then, my prop collection has grown and I’ve had the opportunity to teach others too which has been pretty awesome.
What has been your favourite moment at a Burn?
Mooning the moon. A campmate and I were having a solid chat and it came up that the moon just sits in the sky, constantly mooning us. Naturally, we decided to moon the moon back. Later that night, most of my camp and I were having a good boogie at Hijinxx and the urge to moon the moon again took over. We ended up collecting a bunch more people, all lined up outside of Hijinxx, got our asses out and mooned the moon.
What are you most excited about for Kiwiburn 2023?
Paddock shenanigans with my Burn fam, watching the sun come up from the Hangout, and of course, the Effigy run!
