Mobile Art Vehicles

Bikes and scooters are encouraged to join us on the paddock, but they need to remember to be safe and obey the speed limits, at night they also need lights, any other vehicle or art piece that moves needs to be an official Kiwiburn support vehicle or meet our Mobile art criteria below.

I know that this may seem like unnecessary officialdom and paperwork but moving vehicles have killed and injured people at burns in the past and we want to keep all our participants safe.

Pre-register your vehicle with us, email mutantvehicles@kiwiburn.com

Once you get to the paddock arrange to visit us at the Artery with your vehicle for an inspection.

Nominated drivers will receive a Mobile Art Drivers Licence and are the only people who can drive the vehicle.

One person will be the nominated point of contact for the vehicle if any issues arise during the event.

Mutant Vehicle Criteria

In order to be eligible for a Mobile Art license you must satisfy ALL of the following criteria:

There are five main points the we consider when reviewing your vehicle.

1. Level of Mutation
A radically mutated vehicle will not resemble or represent a car, truck, golf cart or any other readily identifiable vehicle.  The vehicle could be permanently mutated or a street legal vehicle that may have the exterior suitably covered.

2. Interactivity
Provide an interactive experience for the Paddock participants. Interactivity is defined as an opportunity for any village citizen to participate in some activity offered by your vehicle. The theme and/or size of the vehicle is what’s considered here.

  • Do you entertain a crowd?
  • Have plenty of room for riders?
  • Provide a service to the community via your vehicle?
  • Include an interactive element

3. Safety
Depending on the size and style of your vehicle, some or all of the following may apply:

  • The speed limit on the paddock is a fast walking pace, the vehicle must be able to maintain this speed limit as it explores the paddock.
  • Brakes must be in good working order.
  • The vehicle should have sturdy side railings and stair railings.
  • A fire extinguisher must be fitted.
  • Keeping a first aid kit on board is just plain smart.
  • Passenger carrying vehicles should also have a safe access area and procedures for loading and unloading passengers. If the driver cannot clearly observe the passengers a conductor/load master may be required.
  • Vehicles must be stationary when loading or unloading passengers
  • If the driver does not have good vision forward and to the sides then a safety crew is required to escort it when moving to ensure participants are not endangered.

4. Lighting

For vehicles seeking a night license, basic requirements must be met:

  • The rear, front AND sides must be lit. All vehicle extremities must be it.
  • Any trailer hitch or dangerous area of the vehicle must be lit.
  • Anywhere someone would walk, step, or climb on your vehicle should be lit, especially stairs and ladders.

5. Sound

Kiwiburn has a strict sound policy and this includes Mobile art vehicles.

In addition to these criteria, you must also:

Describe the motivation for creating your Mobile art Vehicle.
If the convenience of personal transportation is your primary goal, please rethink your intent. A primary factor driving your urge to drive should be the sharing of your creation with the rest of the community.

Comply with all MAD pre-registration guidelines and deadlines.
Mobile Art pre-registration is mandatory. You will be asked to include a photo or sketch of your vehicle, describe the safety considerations you are making, give detailed information about the radical mutations to the vehicle.

Kiwiburn vehicle/driving protocols

Our Paddock has a few simple driving guidelines.

  1. The maximum speed is limited to a fast walking pace.
  2. The Paddock is a pedestrian environment, Give way to pedestrians.
  3. The driver must be alert and not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

If you violate these community guidelines, you’ll lose the privilege of driving your Mobile Art Vehicle at Kiwiburn. In addition, you and your vehicle may also be removed from the event. Furthermore, owners that cannot follow our simple rules run the risk of not being licensed in subsequent years.

Mobile Art Vehicle Licenses

All licensed Mobile Art Vehicles will be given a Day and/or a Night license. Day or Night designation is based on many factors, including what purpose the vehicle serves, lighting and how it is implemented. Mobile Art Vehicles that incorporate flame effects may also receive a Burn License. Any trailers that are a component of a Mobile Art Vehicle must be licensed as well.

Day/Night Licenses
Day licenses allow Mobile Art Vehicles to move around the Paddock during the daytime.
Night licenses allow Mobile Art Vehicles to move around the Paddock at night. To receive a night license, Mobile Art Vehicles must be FULLY and RADICALLY illuminated. Some vehicles may receive both a night and a day license.

Trailer Licenses
Trailer licenses are required for any trailers that are attached to Mobile Art Vehicles. These are licensed separately from the Vehicle, this is because in the past at some burns participants have been killed and injured when they tried to enter or exit via the space between the art car and the trailer and they were run over by the trailer.

Burn Licenses
These licenses allow Mobile Art Vehicles that incorporate flame effects or fire in any way. An additional process is required for these licenses.

Drivers Licences
To drive the vehicle, you must have been issued with a Mobile Art Drivers Licence and be in a safe and sober state.

Final Licensing

Final licensing takes place at Kiwiburn, where the MAD team will look at the final incarnation of your vehicle. When you are ready to start driving your Mobile Art Vehicle on site, book an appointment at the Artery.

Once at the Artery, the MAD staff will consider the following:

  • Does your vehicle meet the criteria?
  • Does the vehicle meet (or exceed) what was proposed in the application?

After you have read and understand all of the above sections, email the Mobile Art Department to start your pre-registration process – mutantvehicles@kiwiburn.com
